Specialist says RP to be controled using stem cells

Tehran, July 7, IRNA – Retina ultra-specialist Dr. Nourinia said on Monday that Iranian specialists have managed to control retinitis pigmentosa (RP) using stem cells.

Talking to Iran Sepid newspaper published for the blind, Dr. Nourinia said specialists in Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Labafinejad Hospital have worked on containing the RP disease progress.

He said Ruyan Institution and Labafinejad Hospital have jointly undertaken the research project, whose tentative phase on animals has been successful. The human phase, featuring taking samples from bone marrow, is underway, he added.

He noted that three patients have been introduced to Ruyan Research Institute for this purpose.

He added that the medicare will be effective in patients having the least optic background.
