Proper treatment of red eyes crucial

Tehran, July 7, IRNA -- Eye redness, also known ad Bloodshot, is due to swollen or dilated blood vessels, which cause the surface of the eye to look red.

Ramin Nourinia, an ophthalmologist, said there are many possible causes of a red eye including irritation, infection and contamination, according to the Tuesday edition of the English language newspaper Iran Daily.

He noted eye redness can also be caused by a blow or by a foreign object in the eye.

He said that patients with Bloodshot eyes should refer to ophthalmologist as soon as possible, adding eye infection can be cured by antibiotic therapy.

He noted that ophthalmologists prescribe anti-allergic medicines to treat red eyes brought on by allergy.

"A foreign object in the eye should also be removed by an ophthalmologist," he said.

The use of Naphazoline eye drop, which only closes the vessels, has temporary impact on red eyes, he said adding self medication will damage the eyes.

"Some are cause for concern; some are medical emergencies. Others are nothing to worry about."

How red the eye appears is often less of a concern than whether you also have eye pain or difficulty seeing.

Bloodshot eyes appear red because the vessels in the surface of the white portion of the eye (sclera) become swollen.
