Iran police suspend Scania buses registration

Tehran, June 30, IRNA - Iran’s police have suspended issuing license plates for buses assembled in Iran by the Swedish carmaker Scania, said a lawmaker.

Hamid Reza Fouladgar, a member of Majlis Industries and Mines Committee, said the decision follows after the recent malfunctioning of the buses which led to fatal crashes, said 'Iran Daily' in its Upside/Downside column on Monday.

He added that efforts are underway to not close the company in Iran “due to the unemployment of its workers”.

The buses have been blamed for several deadly accidents in Iran since 2012.

In September 2013, 44 people were killed and 39 injured after two passenger buses collided on the Tehran-Qom highway and caught fire.

The incident occured after the front tyre of a Scania bus carrying passengers from Isfahan burst into flames near Qom city and the bus crossed a guardrail, swerved into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with another Scania bus carrying passengers from Tehran to Yazd.
