Quake jolts W Azarbaijan province

Tehran, April 16, IRNA - An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale jolted vicinity of Sardasht in West Azarbaijan province Wednesday morning.

According to seismological base of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the quake occurred at 05:44 hours local time (0114 GMT).

The epicenter of the quake was registered in an area located at 35.69 degrees latitude and 45.19 degrees longitude.

There is no report on any damage caused by the earthquake.

Iran sits on several major faultlines of the earth’s crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating.

The worst in recent years hit Bam in southeastern Kerman province in December 2003, killing 31,000 people - about a quarter of its population - and destroying the city’s ancient mud-brick citadel.
