Current situation in Syria originated from West strategic mistake

Tehran, Jan 30, IRNA -- Head of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations Kamal Kharrazi said Wednesday that the present critical situation in Syria was resulted from strategic mistake of the West as well as ambitions of certain regional states.

Kharrazi made the remarks in a meeting with the visiting group of former world leaders known as "The Elders" including former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

The Al-Qaeda is currently not just a terrorist group but a terrorist army that causes tension in the region thanks to the supports of certain ambitious regional states and a number of western countries, said the politician.

Kharrazi said the only way out of the Syrian crisis is a public voting without foreign interference.

Tehran believes that only the Syrian nation is entitled to decide for its own destiny, said the politician.

He further said Iran is against any foreign interference in the internal affairs of Syria.

The official expressed Iran's full readiness to help resolve the Syrian crisis.

Kofi Annan, too, appreciated Iran's constructive role in the region expressing dissatisfaction over preventing Tehran from attending the Geneva II conference on Syria.

Annan said Tehran's participating in the even was undeniable and necessary.

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who had invited Iran to take part in the January 22 conference on Syria in the Swiss city, has later cancelled his invitation under the pressure of the US and the Takfiris.
