21 die as tourist boat capsizes in Andaman

New Delhi, Jan 26, IRNA -- At least 21 persons died today when a tourist boat carrying them capsized in the Bay of Bengal near Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar islands.

The boat carrying 45 people - tourists from Kanchi Puram district of Tamil Nadu and Mumbai, and crew members -- sank on its way from Ross Island to North Bay, pti quoted official sources as saying. The South Andaman district administration confirmed 21 deaths and said 13 people were rescued.

Civil administration and defence establishments like the Coast Guard conducted operations to rescue remaining passengers.

It was suspected that some persons might have been trapped in the cabin of the boat 'Aqua Marine'.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today expressed shock over the boat tragedy in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and condoled the loss of lives.

Singh asked all central agencies to immediately assist in the rescue and relief operations, a PMO statement said.
