Iran flag bearer of campaign against violence: president

Tehran, Jan 17, IRNA – Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said that Iran as an Islamic country bears the flag of campaign against violence and extremism by focusing on the issue in the Uinted Nations General Assembly.

President Rouhani made the remarks on Friday while addressing the 20th International Conference on Islamic Unity in Tehran.

The president noted that Iran's plan labeled as World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE) was unanimously adopted in the UN General Assembly.

The plan was so comprehensive and impressive that even those opposed to it were forced to vote for it, Rouhani said.

"The plan was the first step against Islamophobia long pursued by enemies of Islam"

The Iranian government and nation, by adopting a policy of balance and prudence, have made it clear to the world that they are after moderation, Rouhani said.

The 27th Conference on the Islamic Unity opened here Friday morning with participation of a large number of Islamic scholars from both inside and outside of the country as well as representatives of Najaf and Qom Ulema.

Many influential and outstanding Shiite and Sunni personalities, some Al-Azhar dignitaries, a number of high-ranking Muftis are also present in the event.

Some of 370 foreign guests attending the conference from 50 world countries include those from Malaysia, Russia, Greece, Iraq, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Algeria, the UK, the US, Australia, Uganda, Tunisia, Netherlands, Qatar, Yemen and Egypt.
