Tehran, IRNA- A shooting at an Eid al-Fitr event in Philadelphia, the largest city of the northeastern US state of Pennsylvania left several people injured.

According to local media reports cited by IRNA, three people were shot after gunfire erupted in a Philadelphia park where an Eid al-Fitr ceremony to mark the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, was taking place.

Several people were arrested and several guns recovered at the scene, according to police. Their identity or motive were not specified

The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. local time Wednesday near Clara Muhammad Square where an estimated 1,000 people were at the celebration.

US Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan representing Pennsylvania said she was "saddened" to hear of the shooting that left several people injured in West Philadelphia.

The United States has seen a significant increase in mass shooting and gun-related violence in recent years.

The Armed Violence Archive announced that more than 42,000 people died with firearms in the United States in 2023.
