New York, IRNA – The spokesman for the United Nations says the world body is concerned about the escalation of tensions in the West Asia region following a deadly Israeli attacks on the consular section of the Iranian Embassy in Damascus and potential retaliatory action by the Islamic Republic.

According to IRNA reporter, Stephane Dujarric was responding to questions raised during a presser on Monday that: Is there a fear that Iran will target Israeli embassies around the world. Has UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres talked to the Iranians? Is Guterres worried that conflict will break out across the region?

The UN spokesperson said that the Secretary General had talked to the Iranian Foreign Minister last week, adding that we are publicly concerned about the risk of further escalation of tensions in the region.

On the question about the extent of the dialogue between the United Nations and the Iranian authorities, Dujarric replied that it depends on the subject, saying the UN communicates with different members based on what they want to talk about.

The UN Secretary General has been in frequent contact with the Iranian Foreign Minister who himself requested to meet Guterres whenever visited New York. Therefore, communication at different levels is ongoing and continues, the spokesperson added.

Tensions in the West Asian region escalated after the Israeli regime targeted the Iranian diplomatic mission with an airstrike on April 1, killing 7 Iranian military advisors to Syria, including two senior members of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps.  

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, in a message on the the martyrdom of IRGC commanders emphasized that the Iranian nation will make the Zionist regime regret this crime and similar ones.

Iran vowed to give a decisive response to the deadly Israeli aggression at an appropriate time and place.
