Tehran, IRNA – EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell has called on the Islamic Republic of Iran to exercise restraint in the wake of the Israeli regime’s recent attack on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria.

Borrell was speaking with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on the phone on Wednesday.

Amirabdollahian said that European officials demand Iran exercise restraint while the Israeli regime has violated international law and attacked a diplomatic mission that enjoyed full protection under the convention on diplomatic and consular rights.

He added that regional peace and security, as well as the security of diplomatic missions have all been violated in the “terrorist act” by the Israeli regime.

The top Iranian diplomat also raised the question that how the European Union would have reacted if a Western country’s embassy had been attacked in Ukraine.

Borrell said the EU believes that the Israeli attack, which left 13 people dead including 7 Iranian military advisors, was in contrast with de-escalation efforts in the region. He also said that he would convey Iran’s concerns to the bloc.

The two politicians discussed the Gaza war as well, with the Iranian FM saying that the US would be directly responsible for escalating tensions if it continues to support the Israeli regime in its genocide and war crimes against Palestinians in Gaza.
