Tehran, IRNA - The director general of the Red Crescent Society in Sistan and Baluchestan province has said that relief workers have assisted about 19,000 people affected by flooding in the region.

Mohammad Mehdi Sajjadi told IRNA on Monday that heavy rainfall has caused flooding in 14 counties in the province, damaging bridges, roads, and inundating homes in the southern regions.

He added that relief operations were ongoing in the region and that about 19,000 people affected by the flooding were assisted.

Aid, including 18 shipments of water and food, has been dispatched to some 450 villages by ground and air, he said.

Some 2,800 individuals whave also been housed in emergency shelters, Sajjadi said.

Additionally, he said, Red Crescent helicopters have carried out 35 sorties to reach areas isolated by flood waters, distributing about 10,000 food packages among the victims.
