Speaking at a local ceremony in Tehran on Tuesday, General Hassan Momeni said road accidents claimed the lives of 17,500 people this year, a 6% rise compared to the same period last year.
In his remarks, the Traffic Police chief said most of the road accidents happen during the 13-day celebrations of the new Iranian year, also known as Nowruz, when more people travel across the country.
Ilam, Tehran and Alborz provinces have recorded the lowest number of accidents while Mazandaran and Gilan provinces in northern Iran have registered the highest in this year’s Nowruz, General Momeni noted.
