“After all the dehumanizing images of the past weeks this man-made and avoidable tragedy, of which we witnessed many during this time, was what tipped me over to hand in my resignation, earlier today, to our (foreign) minister Hanke Bruins Slot and our Secretary-General Paul Huijts,” Angélique Eijpe said in her resignation letter last week.
A senior strategist and research coordinator at the Dutch foreign ministry, Eijpe said her resignation felt overdue as the Dutch government “condoned and even supported the genocidal actions of our ally over these past weeks".
“This is not how I ever imagined leaving the organization after 21 years of service, but I take great comfort knowing I can explain my choice to my sons and show them that standing up for core values comes before status or money, not just in theory but also in practice,” she noted.
The Israeli regime has been heavily and indiscriminately bombing Gaza, a narrow strip of blockaded territory that is home to 2.3 million Palestinians, since October 7. Over 13,000 people have been killed since the war began, including more than 5,500 children.
