Tehran, IRNA – Head of the Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences says some 60 to 70% of Iranian adults are either overweight or obese.

Fereydoun Azizi revealed the figures during a press briefing at the university on Sunday.

Azizi further highlighted that abdominal obesity, also known as central obesity and often leads to premature death, is highly prevalent among Iranian adults.

He said the rise in obesity rates in Iran is because of lifestyle changes, including excessive use of private cars, physical inactivity, and consumption of fast food and high-calorie foods.
