Tehran, IRNA - Senior commanders from the Iranian Army and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) have underscored the importance of unity between the two pillars of Iran’s armed forces as "a source of hope" for the Supreme Leader and the entire nation.

The meeting, called “The Glory of Unity”, was held in Tehran to mark the end of the Sacred Defense Week, which is celebrated annually in honor of martyrs and war veterans of the Iraqi-imposed war on the Islamic Republic in 1980-88.

Speaking at the event, Major General Hossein Salami, chief commander of the IRGC, described the Sacred Defense as the glorious inception of the Iranian nation's resistance against the "coalition" of the global arrogance.

“Through the struggle, sacrifice, and selflessness of the children of this land during the eight years of Sacred Defense, an eternal epic was marked in the history of Islam,” he stated.

Salami considered the solidarity, camaraderie, and brotherhood between the Army and the IRGC as a source of hope for Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and the Iranian nation, and a source of disappointment for the enemies.

He said this unity and brotherhood within the Iranian Armed Forces is the result of the sacrifices of those who valiantly defended the country during the Sacred Defense.

Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, the chief commander of Iran’s Army, also addressed the gathering, emphasizing that the unity between the Army and the IRGC is at its peak under the command of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution.

Iraq, under former dictator Saddam Hussein, launched a war against Iran a little more than one and a half years after the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which toppled the US-backed Pahlavi regime.

Iraq was fully supported, both militarily and logistically, by the United States and its allies.
