London, IRNA – Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland, has said that the Islamic Republic’s joining BRICS will help promote the group’s performance as the country has high capabilities in different fields.

Ali Bahraini was speaking on Friday at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, known as UNCTAD, in Geneva.

The Iranian ambassador, who was among the five key speakers at the conference, was in attendance at the invitation of the UNCTAD chief.

Bahraini elaborated on Iran’s contribution to the promotion of the performance of BRICS once the country officially joins the group.

He said that Iran will play a great role in that regard because the country has rich energy resources and attained high-level scientific and technological development.

Moreover, he added, Iran has skillful workforce and is of a unique geographical location, as well as a key position in transit of goods.

BRICS is a group of emerging economies, namely Brazil, Russia, China, India and South Africa.

In August 2023 and during their latest summit, BRICS members invited Iran and five other countries, including Saudi Arabia, to join their group, which is set to take place in January 2024.

Participants in that summit also agreed to use local currencies in an effort to reduce dependence on the US dollar.
