New York, IRNA – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian says an agreement to revive the 2015 nuclear deal is within reach if the other parties to the deal, also known as the JCPOA, have the necessary will to do so.

“If the other parties and the Americans have the necessary will in the framework of the previous negotiations and Iran’s priorities, we can consider an agreement accessible,” Amirabdollahian said in an exclusive interview with IRNA in New York, before leaving for Tehran, late on Sunday.

He said he had told former American diplomats and politicians during his stay in New York that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has made it clear that the Islamic Republic is in favor of fair and respectful negotiations.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will continue its diplomatic efforts to reach a good and sustainable agreement, but I emphasized that we will never tolerate America’s hypocritical behavior and actions,” he asserted.

The chief Iranian diplomat made clear that Iran’s hands are not tied in responding to those actions, but has chosen the path of diplomacy for now.

“The positive approach and constructive actions of the other parties to reach an agreement is also important,” he said.

Amirabdollahian further said that Tehran has received positive messages from Washington but will judge those messages based on America’s “political behavior”.

He also explained that the initiative put forward by the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, to revive the JCPOAS is intended to accelerate the process of returning all parties to their commitments under the deal.

“It does not mean that the Sultan of Oman carries a new plan or text,” he added.

Iran-Egypt ties

Regarding Tehran-Cairo relations, Amirabdollahian said that he had held some good talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry in New York.

“We discussed all aspects of bilateral relations of interest. We exchanged views on some regional and international issues. The Islamic Republic of Iran considers Egypt a very important country in the Muslim world and in the region,” he said.

The top diplomat said that Iran believes that the improvement of Tehran-Cairo relations will not only benefit the two countries but also the entire region and the Muslim world.

Amirabdollahian said he and Shoukry had agreed to take joint steps on the way to restore diplomatic relations between Iran and Egypt.
