Tehran, IRNA – Iran has condemned a deadly terrorist attack in Burkina Faso on Tuesday that has killed over 50 soldiers and volunteer fighters.

In a statement on Thursday evening, Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani expressed condolences to the government and people of the West African country, especially the families of the victims.

He expressed hope that “with a serious and effective fight against the sinister phenomenon of terrorism and extremism, we will witness peace and stability in different regions of the world, including West Africa.”

Seventeen soldiers and 36 volunteer fighters were killed by terrorists in northern Burkina Faso, the army said on Tuesday.

The West African country has been battling armed groups, some with links to al Qaeda and Daesh, in its desert north since 2015.
