Zahedan, IRNA – The local police of the Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan in the southeast of the country dismantled two drug smuggling gangs and seized more than one thousand kilograms of various types of narcotics.

Commander of the Sistan and Baluchestan Police Doust-Ali Jalilian told IRNA that the force carried out extensive intelligence operations and attained clues about the smuggling of huge drug shipments by two armed gangs who intended to transfer the drugs from northern and southern cities of the province to the center of Iran.

In some separate operations, the police clashed with drug smugglers on the weekend, the commander said, adding that following heavy fire from police commandos, the smugglers abandoned their vehicles and tried to flee to the heights of the region.

In these operations, six smugglers from two gangs were arrested and eight cars were also confiscated, Jalilian said, noting that the seized drugs consist of 948 kilograms of opium, 100 kilograms of hashish, and over 75 kilograms of heroin.
