Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana and Chief of the UN Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) office of Asia-Pacific Marco Toscano-Rivalta made the remarks during a meeting with head of National Cartographic Center of Iran Ali Javidaneh in Bangkok on Monday.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the eighth session of the Committee on Disaster Risk Reduction (CDRR) of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) held in the Thai capital.
Javidaneh talked about various topics, including an International Conference on Combatting Sand and Dust Storms, with the cooperation of UN agencies, hosted by Tehran in September 2023 and the previous visit of the ESCAP deputy to Iran, as well as regional capacity building of the country's mapping organization, including holding specialized international training courses for members of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).
Pointing to the spatial information capacities in the field of crisis management and the valuable actions of the National Cartographic Center of Iran in this regard, he emphasized that Iran supports the Asia-Pacific Center for Development of Disaster Information Management (APDIM).
Alisjahbana and Toscano-Rivalta, for their part, appreciated the Islamic Republic of Iran's support for the APDIM and valuable measures of Iran on the issue of crisis management.
They expressed hope for attending the International Conference on Combatting Sand and Dust Storms, with the cooperation of UN agencies, which is scheduled to be held in the Iranian capital city of Tehran on September 9 and 10, 2023.
The eighth session of the Committee on Disaster Risk Reduction (CDRR) of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) was held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 25 to 27 July 2023.
