Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s foreign minister says regional countries can ensure the security of the Persian Gulf region without the interference of extra-regional forces.

“The security of the Persian Gulf region is important to the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the countries of the region can ensure the security of this region without foreign interference,” Hossein Amirabdollahian said during a phone conversation with his counterpart from the United Arab Emirates Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan late on Saturday.

Also in the phone call, Amirabdollahian strongly condemned the desecration of the holy Quran in Sweden and in Denmark and called for an emergency meeting of the foreign ministers of the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Amirabdollahian stressed the need to deal seriously with the perpetrators of the recurring acts of desecration against Islamic sanctities in Europe.

Meanwhile, the Emirati foreign minister denounced the desecration of religious sanctities and holy books and welcomed Amirabdollahian’s proposal to hold an emergency OIC meeting to discuss the incidents.

Members of the “Danish Patriots”, an ultra-nationalist group, set fire to a book purported to be the holy Quran in front of the Iraqi embassy in Copenhagen on Friday while live-streaming their blasphemous act online.

The incident came a day after two people burned a copy of the Holy Quran outside the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm, which in turn took place a month after a person stomped on the Quran before setting several pages alight in front of a large mosque in the same city.
