Tehran, IRNA – Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has reaffirmed Iranian sovereignty over the three Persian Gulf islands of Abu Musa, the Greater Tunb, and the Lesser Tunb.

In an open session of the parliament in Tehran on Sunday, Qalibaf reacted to a recent joint statement by Russia and Arab countries following a sixth joint ministerial meeting between the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council and the Russian Federation in Moscow.

He emphasized that Iran's foreign policy is based on interacting with all legitimate governments by considering national interests and observing three principles of dignity, wisdom, and expediency.

Based on the principles, Iran and Russia, as two important countries in the region, are expanding cooperation in various fields based on common interests,  he noted.

However, Qlibaf called for respecting the red lines of the Iranians for promoting mutual cooperation, noting that Iran's territorial integrity and the country's sovereignty over the three islands in the Persian Gulf islands must be respected.

The islands of Abu Musa, the Greater Tunb, and the Lesser Tunb have historically been part of Iran, proof of which can be found in historical, legal, and geographical documents in Iran and worldwide. he underlined.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador on Wednesday to protest the contents of the joint statement while urging Russia to revise its stance on the issue.
