Tehran, IRNA - A senior Iranian Army official has said the Islamic Republic has made significant headway in all areas of defense despite sanctions imposed on the country by the United States and its Western allies.

“Despite sanctions, Iran has experienced growth in all fields and achieved significant accomplishments through the efforts of Iranian elites and youth,” Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, deputy commander of the Iranian Army for coordination affairs, said on Monday.

“Highly qualified human resources can contribute to the growth and excellence of the organization,” he said at a conference in Khatam Al-Anbia Air Defense Academy in Tehran.

Rear Admiral Sayyari underscored the importance of defensive deterrence, calling on the armed forces to further build their capabilities to “deter the enemy from crossing our borders and undermining our national interests".

Iranian officials have long asserted that the country’s military capabilities are entirely meant for defense purposes.
