Tehran, IRNA – Nearly 21,823 deaths as a result of infection with HIV have been registered in Iran of a total infection figure of 45,463 recorded in the country over more than three decades, according to Iranian health ministry’s infectious diseases department.

In a report published on Monday, the department said by the end of the previous Iranian calendar year in March, some 23,640 HIV-positive patients were still alive.

It said 18,044 of the infected individuals go to health centers around the country to receive treatment services, and 17,045 people are currently under treatment.

According to the report, although 81% of all cases of infection with HIV in Iran are men and 19% are women, the pattern of transmission and the percentage of men and women infected with the disease have changed in recent years.

It added that out of HIV cases identified and reported last year, 30% of registered cases are women and 70% are men.
