Tehran, IRNA – President Ebrahim Raisi appointed Ali-Akbar Ahmadian as the new secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) earlier on Monday to replace Ali Shamkhani. The new SNSC chief has been in charge of key posts in the Islamic Republic over the past four decades.

Ahmadian, 62, is considered one of the most respected figures in the country in matters of national security.

He was a senior commander in different military operations over the 1980-88 Iraqi-imposed war on Iran.

The new SNSC secretary who holds a Ph.D. in strategic management from the Supreme National Defense University is also a dentist.

Known as one of the founders of the IRGC Navy, the official has played a pivotal role in forming a modern naval force for the IRGC.

Ahmadian has been serving as the commander of the IRGC Navy for 16 years before he was appointed as IRGC chief of staff upon a decree in 2000 by the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

During his tenure, he created some major changes in the IRGC and shook up its structure.

Ahmadian, who has been serving as the chief of IRGC Strategic Center for 16 years, has also led the force's Imam Hossein University.

He was one of the five figures who were appointed by the Supreme Leader last September to join Iran’s Expediency Council.
