Chabahar, IRNA – Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has warned the ruling Taliban group in Afghanistan that they should not ignore the water rights of people living in Iran's southeast from the Hirmand (Helmand) river, stressing the government is determined to defend the nation’s rights under a treaty signed in 1973.

Iran’s water right from the Hirmand river is a serious issue, President Raisi said during a visit to Iran's southeastern regions on Thursday.

He further urged the ruling government in Afghanistan to let the Iranian experts visit dams built on Hirmand to see if there is a shortage of water as claimed by Taliban officials.

Raisi arrived at Konarak Airport earlier on Thursday to meet Pakistani Prime Minister, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, and to personally monitor development projects in the province of Sistan and Baluchestan.
