Tehran, IRNA - Three men have been arrested in connection with the martyrdom on Monday of a local police chief in Saravan, a city in the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan-Baluchestan, the police in the region have said.

Colonel Doustali Jalilian, chief of police of Sistan and Baluchestan, told IRNA on Tuesday that following an elaborate intelligence operation, three perpetrators of the “cowardly” murder were identified and arrested in their hideout.

“Police officers were able to identify and arrest three of the assassination agents in a swift operation,” he said.

Lieutenant Colonel Ali-Reza Shahraki was shot and killed in his private car by unknown assailants at an intersection in Saravan on Sunday. His wife was also critically wounded in the attack and passed away later.

Jalilian said that one of those arrested was affiliated with the Jaish al-Adl terrorist group, and that a cache of guns and ammunition were seized from their hideout.
