Zahedan, IRNA – A police commander in Iran's southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan says the force has seized some 1.667 metric tons of opium in an operation that led to arrests of six narcotics smugglers.

Brigadier Doostali Jalilian said on Sunday that the anti-narcotics police officers had arrested members of an armed and professional smuggling gang who were planning to transfer a large consignment of opium from cities of Zabol, Khash and Saravan, located near Iran's border with Afghanistan and Pakistan, to central parts of the country.

Jalilian said that investigations are still underway to arrest other members of the gang.

He added that the Iranian police will spare no effort in fighting drugs and narcotics smuggling into the country.
