Tehran, IRNA – Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said on Tuesday that with a considerable population, rich resources and wide geographical scope, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) can play a key role in standing against the Western unilateralism.

The president made the remarks during a meeting in Tehran with visiting SCO Secretary General Zhang Ming.

He said that Iran attaches special significance to further cooperation and interaction with SCO.

Referring to Iran’s official accession to the organization, President Raisi called on the SCO secretariat to make more efforts to give a boost to cooperation between Iran and SCO.  

The SCO secretary general, for his part, presented a report about the process of Iran’s joining the organization.

He underlined Iran’s role in the maintenance of peace, stability and progress in the region and welcomed Iran's accession to SCO.

Iran’s proposals for enhancement of the SCO structure is being examined in the secretariat, Ming said.  

He voiced certainty that with its historical and civilizational background, Iran can prove to be an active member for SCO to help it reach its goals.
