Baghdad, IRNA – Iraq’s Parliament Speaker Mohamed Al-Halbousi has emphasized that the legislative body supports relations between Iran and the Arab country.

Al-Halbousi made the remark in a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and his accompanying delegation in the capital Baghdad on Wednesday night.

The two officials discussed Iran-Iraq relations, and stressed the importance of bilateral cooperation in different fields.

The Iraqi speaker said that Iraq’s doors are open to the neighboring states as well as Arab and international friends, underlining that parliament backs the Iraqi government’s efforts to enhance ties with Iran.

Amirabdollahian, for his part, said that the Islamic Republic of Iran always supports development and stability in Iraq.

The Iranian foreign minister arrived in Iraq earlier on Wednesday for a two-day visit.

According to the Iraqi presidency office, Amirabdollahian conveyed an invitation message from Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi to Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid to visit Iran.

According to the statement, the Iraqi president vowed to visit Iran as soon as possible.

President Rashid said in a meeting with Iran’s foreign minister that Iraq and Iran are two neighboring states with historical commonalities, and they can help boost regional security and stability and play a role in de-escalation at regional and international levels.

The Iraqi president also expressed gratitude to Iran for standing with the Iraqi people during former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s regime and the war against Daesh terrorists.

Amirabdollahian said that the Islamic Republic is keen on consolidating ties and increasing cooperation with Iraq.
