Qom, IRNA – The Islamic Republic of Iran Navy is scheduled to be equipped with super-heavy submarines in the near future, an Iranian navy commander said.

Commodore Babak Baluch, the deputy chief of Iran's navy for coordination, made the remarks during the Friday Prayers sermon in Qom, noting that the Army of the Islamic Republic of Iran possesses an honorable and powerful position in respect of defending territorial waters and influencing regional and international developments.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Navy has played a key role in the sacred defense, the era of construction and prosperity of the Islamic Revolution, he said, adding that the navy succeeded in identifying and monitoring the enemy’s military might and movements during the eight-year war between Iraq and Iran.

The Iranian navy did not allow the Baath regime to halt the export of Iranian oil through the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, the commander noted.

Following the sacred defense, the navy has tried to maintain the existing systems and upgrade the equipment relying on up-to-date know-how to manufacture modern vessels, Baluch added.

In compliance with the guidelines of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, the naval forces have paid heed to the significance of the security of oil tankers and tried to safeguard the free movement in the Persian Gulf waterway along with enhancing maritime diplomacy in cooperation with the neighboring and regional countries, he mentioned.

According to the coordinator, important news on the achievements and the strategic might of the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy will be released in the near future.
