Doha, IRNA - Iran’s national football team coach Carlos Queiroz has regretted Iran’s failure to score in its final group match in World Cup 2022 against the United States.

Queiroz told reporters after the match against the US on Wednesday that the Iranian team was punished for not finding the back of the net in the game despite several attempts on goal.

The US team qualified from Group B along with England after beating Iran 1-0. Iran could have secured a place in round of 16 of the World Cup for a first time in history with a draw against the US.

Queiroz said his team created enough goal scoring chances in the second half of the match against the US.

The team that fails to score is always punished in football, he said.

However, the Portuguese coach said he was proud of his players and their hard work on then pitch while he wished success for the American team in the knock-out stage of the world cup.
