Ahvaz, IRNA – A senior official at the Department of Environment in Khuzestan Province, southwestern Iran, said that they had rescued a huge whale shark trapped off the coast of Imam Khomeini Port.

Alireza Reishahri, the head of the Maritime Environment Office of Khuzestan’s Environment Department, told IRNA on Tuesday that the animal had come ashore at the time of high tide and been trapped in the jetty.

He said that the whale shark weighed over a ton and was 5 meters long. It was lifted using a crane and released into the sea.

The official added that the trapped whale shark belonged to an endangered species.
