London, IRNA – European troika is engaged in lodging baseless accusations which lack any legal grounds with regard to creating hue and cry over Russia-Iran cooperation in Ukraine war while the EU is sending billions of dollars worth of military hardware one side of the dispute and is accused of enflaming the fire of war and it lacks to touch on such allegations.

As reported by IRNA, the three European countries based on unconfirmed news have made the UN Security Council’s Resolution 2231 a pretext for falsely opening Iran’s foot in their alleged dossier while imposing fresh sanctions on the Islamic Republic. On the same basis, troika has asked the United Nations in the wake of the mentioned resolution to investigate about the (baseless) allegations on dispatch of Iranian missiles and drones to Russia.

Sone European officials have concurrently claimed that it should be clarified that the measures by Russia and Iran are violation of the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 or not?

This is while the British Foreign Office in a statement on Thursday repeated the unfounded allegations against Iran by claiming that Iran actively enflames the war by dispatching drones to Russia and benefits from the Russia’s attacks on Ukrainian citizens. It further claimed that therefore, both Russia and Iran violate the Resolution 2231 which controls the transfer of these weapons from Iran.

Why Troika’s Allegations Lack Legal Basis?

These accusations are lodged while first of all there is no firm evidence to verify the allegations that Iran has sent drones to Russia and secondly even if such allegations are true the UN’s restrictions with regard to weaponry deals have been revoked in the year 2020.

Even if we presume that other restrictions are still enforceable, still those restrictions do not include light drones and merely apply to technology transfer of missiles that have been designed for carrying nuclear warheads.

Eventually, even if these restrictions include drones, yet again the legal liability of obtaining permit from the UN Security Council for transfer of these goods is bestowed on the importer (Russia) and not Iran (as claimed by EU troika).

Therefore, the questions which occurs to one’s mind is that why troika is distorting several layers of the law to get Iran involved at any price? Another point is that notwithstanding the claims on Iran’s collaboration with Russia in Ukraine war, why the EU’s troika has focused on the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 which overlooks on implementation of the JCPOA while the negotiations on removal of sanctions has come to halt due to undecidedness of Joe Biden’s administration to return to the JCPOA.

West’s efforts for instrumental benefits in negotiations to remove sanctions

This issue besides the recent statements by EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell who termed the US congress elections as a hurdle to making progress with the negotiations, shows that the other side is looking for instruments for the next round of talks to make the Islamic Republic to accept their desired agreement. Anyway, what is evident is that the troika’s reasoning for creating a link between Iran’s alleged role in Ukraine war and the UNSC Resolution 2231 is devoid of any legal grounds and is doomed to failure. But, the other side of the coin is evidence which show that the three European countries have bypassed arms embargoes imposed against Moscow and are faced with criticisms and accusations inside the country.
