Speaking in the open session of the Parliament on Sunday, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said that the first and foremost issue in recent unrests in Iran was the death of the 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police arrest.
Amini’s death should be investigated and the result should be publically announced, Qalibaf said, noting that any possible negligence and fault from the side of authorities should be addressed in proportion to their responsibility.
He also called on the commissions of the Parliament to prepare a report on the performance of educational and cultural governmental entities who are responsible on the issue of hijab.
The speaker said that the main issue in the country was the economic situation and people are entitled to be complaining about it and authorities should double their efforts to elevate people’s livelihood.
He said that chaos undermined social cohesion and endangers economy as the restrictions imposed on the internet by the government to contain protests has delivered a blow to online businesses.
Also, the enemy who was ready to remove a big part of the sanctions is incentivized to increase the pressure on Iran when they see the unrest, the speaker noted.
Qalibaf said that there have been protests in Iran like those carried out by teachers and the retired that are rightful and have encouraged the Parliament to legislate to address the problems highlighted by protesters.
The speaker called on protesters to protect the reformist nature of their protests and keep them away from turning subversive.
