In an interview with IRNA here on Thursday, Shahryar Heidari said that the SCO is a Eurasian organization for multilateral security, economic and political cooperation, in which China and Russia play pivotal roles to create balance versus the US and NATO hegemony.
“The pivotal role is played by China and Russia in that treaty (organization) and therefore, the SCO is a global power generally speaking, and a regional power particularly,” further emphasized the parliament member.
The 11th Parliament member in National Security and Foreign Policy Commission added that Iran’s membership in SCO creates both regional and global capacities for Iran in economic and political fields and leads to power generation in those two fields after establishment of relations with its member countries.
Heidari said that Iran’s membership in SCO is also important from the military and security points of view, since two major world powers, namely Russia and China are its members, and some of its other members enjoy prominent international status, and therefore Iran’s official membership in that organization is a political and military victory for Iran.
He said that SCO membership can also play an effective and important role in annulment of sanctions for Iran, and lead to procurement of some part of our country’s needs from the member countries in this organization.
The MP from Sarpol-Zahab and Qasr-e Shirin region also referred to countries’ increased power thanks to membership in treaties and unions, arguing, “By membership in regional and international organizations it is possible to become a big power.”
Shanghai Organization membership to affect Nuclear negotiations
Heidari said that Iran’s membership in SCO is important in country’s economic development, and keeping in mind that Iran has been negotiating with the west for many years to remove the sanctions, definitely the SCO membership and cooperation with Russia and China in that framework can affect the nuclear negotiations positively.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is a Eurasian political, economic and security organization.
In terms of geographic scope and population, it is the world's largest regional organization, covering approximately 60% of the area of Eurasia, 40% of the world population, and more than 30% of global GDP.
