Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi told IRNA on Friday that it seems to be natural that the Islamic Republic wants to get assurances in the current round of negotiations for lifting anti-Iran sanctions and reviving the 2015 nuclear deal, especially after experiencing the US’s withdrawal from the agreement in 2018 and Europeans’ inaction to abide by their commitments under the accord.
He noted that the US seeks to show the positive effects of the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to public opinion because the prolongation of the current energy crisis can have a destructive impact on the upcoming congressional elections.
So, the US wants to conclude the nuclear talks in order to be able to focus on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the MP argued.
The American side is in a hurry more than the Iranian party to reach an agreement on the re-implementation of the JCPOA, he added.
According to the lawmaker, a part of the assurances can be securing continuation of presence of companies, which will come to Iran in order to invest in the country, especially when it comes to the United States, which should avoid putting pressure on the companies to pull out their investments.
However, the member of parliament emphasized that the West claims the nuclear issues are solely related to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Iran, and the problems between the Western powers and the Islamic Republic are only related to those two, but it is not correct, because the Vienna talks are for finding a solution for the nuclear dossier; otherwise, the West may resort to the IAEA Boards of Governors or the UN Security Council in order to open a new dossier to start the negotiations from scratch.
The member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian parliament went on to say that the Islamic Republic will abide by its commitments under the JCPOA, but the West might resort to making up stories to dissuade foreign companies from investing in Iran.
