Tehran, IRNA – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian called on Afghanistan’s ruling government on Thursday to bring the culprits of a 1998 attack against the Iranian consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif to justice in which eight Iranian diplomats and an Iranian journalist were martyred.

He made the remarks on the occasion of the 24th anniversary of the incident on a day which is named Journalist Day in Iran.

The foreign minister said that this coincidence is of special significance because if there were not the efforts of the journalists to reflect the realities, the activities of the diplomats and politicians would go nowhere.

Amirbdollahian assured the families of the 1998 incident in Mazar-i-Sharif that the Iranian Foreign Ministry would shed light into the case.

He said that the Afghan caretaker foreign minister, in an earlier meeting, has stressed that they condemn this crime and that they have no relation with it.

The foreign minister said that he has however insisted on the trial of the culprits of the crime.
