The Twitter account of the representative office of Russia in international organizations based in Vienna has quoted Yury Ushakov saying that Russia supports talks between the US and Iran mediated by the European Union.
Ushakov said that Moscow sees the negotiations as a clear sign, indicating that Tehran is keen on reconciling to resume the nuclear deal, aka the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), completely.
Russia backs the resumption of the nuclear deal in the form endorsed by UN Security Council Resolution 2231, he said, noting that the objective of reviving the implementation of the JCPOA is to pave the way for resumption of normal trade and economic interactions between Iran and other countries, so Moscow will continue its efforts to reach the goal.
Associated Pressed quoted Ushakov as saying in a briefing session ahead of President Putin’s trip to take part in the Astana peace process summit in Tehran that Iran is an important partner for Russia and that the two countries are interested in improving mutual ties to a new level of strategic partnership.
AP also quoted Putin’s aide as saying that Russia, Turkey, and Iran will hold talks on expansion of efforts to find a political solution to the situation in Syria, emphasizing that Moscow vehemently opposes preplanned incursion by Turkey into northern Syria.
The seventh summit meeting of Astana peace process guarantors will be held with the presence of presidents of the three countries – Iran, Russia, and Turkey – in the Iranian capital of Tehran on Tuesday evening.
Presidents of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Russia Vladimir Putin, and Iran Ebrahim Raisi along with a Syrian official will hold talks in the Astana peace talks, stressing the need for respecting Syria's national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The summits were initiated in Kazakhstan's capital in January 2017, so the peace negotiations were called Astana peace talks back then.
The talks retained the same name as the Astana negotiations after Kazakhstan changed the name of its capital city to Nur-Sultan in 2019.
The 18th round of the Astana peace negotiations that were initiated by Russia, Iran, and Turkey in 2017 to find a political solution to the years-long crisis in Syria was held in mid-June 2022.
