Vienna talks are in the phase of decision to be taken by the Western sides.
If the Western sides, the US in particular, take necessary decisions and avoid adventurism, there will be possibility for agreement.
The Westerners know that the talks in Vienna, Austria, will not successfully come to end unless the West makes political decision about solving some remaining issues.
Now, it may be time for looking at this reality that why and for what reason the United Sates did leave the nuclear agreement, aka Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
** Trump administration and a dream about new agreement with Iran
Mike Pompeo, former US secretary of state 2018-2021, during his speech just two weeks after Washington’s unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear agreement threatened Iran .
Pompeo said the US would impose “the strongest sanctions in history” against Iran.
Meanwhile, Iran has always stressed that its missile program is for security and defense purposes; and its presence in the region is under the respect for countries’ sovereignty.
Ultimately, the former US president Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew the landmark nuclear deal in May 2018 despite warnings from the JCPOA signatories, disagreement of his advisors and international criticism.
After his withdrawal, Trump imposed sanctions under the maximum pressure policy against Iran.
None of the US aims would be fulfilled as many US officials have said the maximum pressure policy was defeated; and this is the reason behind the current situation of the JCPOA.
** Biden in a dream of a stronger and longer agreement
The incumbent US President Joe Biden, who took office in January 2021, was one of the critics of exit from the JCPOA.
Return to the deal was one of his campaign promises; but it took three months when the first round of Vienna talks started with indirect presence of the United States.
** Complete withdrawal
Pressure from the West, especially the US, was intensified when the new Iranian government took office in August 2021.
Meanwhile, the intensive pressures could not put obstacle to presentation of proposals from Iran.
Iran has explicitly declared that aim behind the talks within the framework of the JCPOA is removal of the sanctions.
Whether the Vienna talks reach an agreement or not, demands of Trump and Biden have not been satisfied.
What has remained for the West is return to the very agreement from which the United States did exit with arrogance.
