Tehran, IRNA – Senior Assistant to Iran's Foreign Minister for Special Political Affairs Ali Asghar Khaji met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Tuesday.

The two sides discussed bilateral ties, the upcoming Astana Process negotiations and the talks in Geneva on the situation in Syria, the talks in Vienna on removing sanctions against Iran, as well as regional and international developments, including Ukraine crisis.

Khaji who is heading a delegation to Syria also met Syria’s foreign minister yesterday.

He emphasized during the meeting that Iran would try to strengthen Syrian-Syrian talks, the return of displaced Syrians and reconstruction of the country.

Faisal Miqdad, Syrian foreign minister, thanked Iran for its support of the Syrian people and government in economic and political arenas.

He said that the enemies of the Syrian people want to achieve through sanctions and political fight what they failed to attain via military and creating terrorist groups.
