Tehran, IRNA – Gholamreza Marhaba, a member of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis), said on Sunday that the policy pursued by the new Iranian government to focus on the Eastern countries can neutralize the sanctions on the country.

Marhaba, also the spokesman of Majlis Economic Commission, made the remarks in an exclusive interview with IRNA on the eve of a visit to Moscow by President Ebrahim Raisi.

He said that due to their geographical proximity, cultural affinities and relatively independent approach in the field of foreign policy, the Eastern countries, including Russia, can provide part of Iran’s economic and trade needs.

"Some powerful countries in the East, including Russia, China and India, were able to maintain their independence and helped Iran in critical moments. That’s why looking East in the foreign policy of the 13th government can define balance in diplomacy.”

The president's visit to Russia is of special significance considering the economic documents that are due to be exchanged, and it can bring good achievements for the country, the lawmaker said.

He said that the visit to Russia by President Raisi can carry different messages to the Western parties to negotiations underway in Vienna on lifting sanctions on Tehran.
