Tehran, IRNA – The spokesman for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Mahmoud Abbaszadeh said that Iran’s permanent membership in Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) would put an end to the West’s strategy to isolate Iran.

The Islamic Republic of Iran was granted permanent membership by the SCO in the organization’s summit on September 17 in Tajikistan.

Neutralizing cruel sanctions by the West against Iran was the most important effect of the membership, Abbaszadeh said in an interview with IRNA on Thursday.

He said that Western powers wanted to isolate the Islamic Republic of Iran, but Iran’s membership in the SCO not only makes isolation meaningless, but also gives an axial role to Iran in the international arena.

The SCO has unlocked a horizon for the world to end the West’s US-centric unilateral move and emergence of multiple world powers around the axis of Asia, the MP opined.

He gave the assessment that the market responded positively to the news surrounding Iran’s permanent membership in the regional organization, which would provide the member states with access to the Persian Gulf as the world’s biggest energy corridor.

Abbaszadeh also noted that a possible membership of Iraq and Syria in the SCO would also connect the organization to the Mediterranean which connects Asia, Europe and Africa.

Such a membership would also give the SCO a position like what OPEC possesses and could play a role in oil pricing in global markets, he added.

The MP underlined that the West itself has acknowledged that the world’s political pivot is moving to East Asia and the SCO would change the balance of power in the world.
