Islamabad, June 16, IRNA - A senior politician and member of Pakistan's Senate praising the resilience and strength of Iranian society despite many challenges over the past forty years, says the basis of legitimacy of the Islamic Revolution is respect for the ballot box and will of the public.

In an interview with IRNA, Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed, Chairman of the Pakistan Senate's Standing Defence Committee said the Iranian people have gone through a very difficult situation after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, from the invasion of Iraq to the assassination of important figures in the country however no such incident could stop the continuity of democratic process and holding of elections in this country.
“I think after the Islamic Revolution the Iranian society has become very strong and the most important thing is that in Iran there is respect for the ballot box,” he said.
The MP added I remember when in 1981 Ayatollah Beheshti was martyred, at that time Imam Khomeini was alive and about seventy members of the Parliament were also martyred but despite all this Imam Khomeini had said that the first thing we have to do is to go for election.
“Iran was also engaged in war with Iraq at that time,” he noted.
Mushahid Hussain Syed expressing his views said the basis of the legitimacy of the Islamic Revolution is the respect for the ballot box and the will of the public.
“I hope for a huge turn out this time and the democratic institutions whether it is Majlis or presidential election will continue to serve their country,” added the Senator.
Iran’s 13th presidential election will be held simultaneously with the sixth round of municipal council elections for the cities and villages, the first mid-term for the 11th round of parliamentary by-election, and the second mid-term for the fifth round of the Assembly of Experts' election on June 18.
Seyyed Amirhossein Qazizadeh Hashemi, Alireza Zakani, Abdonnaser Hemmati, Mohsen Rezaei Mirqaed, Saeed Jalili, Ebrahim Raisi are contesting the elections.
