During the Twelve-Day War between Israel and the Gaza Strip, Western rulers have been hesitant to pursue their traditional policy of supporting the Zionist regime or to accept the demand of their own people and world public opinion that want to show solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The policy of neglecting the Zionist regime's crimes against the Palestinians and, at the same time, showing their support for freedom-seeking nations' willingness to back innocent people of Palestine are sheer signs of double standard when it comes to the rights of the Palestinians.
Although, human rights is a universally accepted concept, Western powers have shown that they will be triggered to react to the violation of the rights when it is in line with their political interests.
** Prohibiting anti-Israel protests in West
It is worth mentioning that when many nations expressed sympathy with the Palestinian people and held anti-Israel protest rallies throughout the world, certain European countries banned such protests.
France and Germany have been among the states that prohibited anti-Israel protests, while people of the countries showed support for the Palestinians and were arrested and punished.
Such a double standard caused resentment and negative reaction. People in that countries underlined that they will not stop showing solidarity with the Palestinian people. The restrictions for pro-Palestine protests have been described as "inappropriate" and "politically motivated" measures.
However, some 3,500 people poured into streets of Berlin to show support for Palestine. In France, 2,500 to 3,500 people held rallies to express solidarity with the oppressed Palestinian nation.
** Adopting double standard to respond to public opinion
Standing against people's demand and world public opinion has brought about repercussions for the Western supporters of the Zionist regime; so, time and again, they took paradoxical stances in dealing with the regime's atrocities.
France proposed a draft resolution at the UN Security Council to promote end of clashes between Israel and the Palestinians in a bid to portray Paris as a positive player at international level.
Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, claimed that her country supports Israel's so-called self-defense; this is while Germans back diplomatic efforts to create sustainable situation in the region.
Britain also announced that London urged Israel and Palestine to cooperate with mediating countries to reach an agreement for an immediate ceasefire and prevent more humanitarian crisis and death toll.
The West's inconsistent strategies in the face of the issue of Palestine have always played a key role in backing the occupying regime of Israel and their rhetoric has not been in support of peace and security in West Asia.
