COVID-19 kills 217 Iranians over past 24 hours, dropping death toll to 70-day low

Tehran, IRNA - Two days after Iran's Health Ministry announced passing the fifth peak of the coronavirus spread in all provinces of Iran, the daily death number fell to 217 cases on Saturday, setting a 70-day low.

The fifth peak of the coronavirus spread began in late June in Iran, but Iran's Health Ministry announced on Thursday after 70 fatal days that all provinces of the country have passed the peak.

Health Ministry said on Saturday that Some 235 more Iranians have died from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) over the past 24 hours, bringing the total deaths to 120,880.

10,135 new cases of infection with the COVID-19 were found over the past 24 hours, 1,673 of whom were hospitalized, it said.

The Iranian Health Ministry noted that 5,075,482 patients out of a total of 5,611,700 infected people have recovered or been discharged from hospitals.

Some 5,802 COVID-19 patients are in critical condition in intensive care units, it added.

The Health Ministry also announced that 40,063,570 Iranians have received the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine and 16,532,554 people have so far received the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The fifth peak of the coronavirus spread began in late June in Iran. Iran's Health Ministry announced on Thursday after 70 fatal days that all provinces of the country have passed the peak.

However, the country has yet to push the spread back to late March, when the number of deaths was under 100 daily deaths.

Iran has recently increased importing vaccines and acceleration vaccination process which led to the current relief in the country.
